    What are NC officials doing to advance civic education?

    In 2023, the NC General Assembly enacted the citizenship proficiency diploma endorsement for NC students. The State Board of Education approved the policy which begins in the 2024-25 school year. Learn more

    As of January 2025, the NC Department of Public Instruction budgets $0 for civic education.

    - NC3 supports legislation that aligns with NC3’s mission, goals, and values that are informed by NC3 stakeholders and our experiences, including legislation that:

    — Provides widespread K-12 educator access to quality NC civic literacy curriculum, resources, and professional development

    — Ensures widespread K-12 student access to quality NC civic literacy and civic leadership education in the classroom and in their out of school time

    — Encourages collaboration and connection among NC civic education programs and professionals

    — Aligns any legislation related to K-12 civic literacy and student civic leadership to data and established best practices, or

    — Increases understanding about the practice and importance of civic education in NC
